26 Weeks Pregnant

This week has been quite interesting. I was summoned to jury duty this week and got to experience the legal side of the world for two days. I have to admit, I was not overly thrilled about the summons at first. It was such a hassle to notify my employer and call the night before my summons to see if I needed to be present. Then there isn't free parking downtown during week days and so coordinating rides with Dan in clinicals was going to be tricky especially knowing I could be dropped from the case at any time. Really, the hassle was not knowing how long my service would last...one day or the length of one trial, which could be for any amount of time. It ended up that I had to appear for the jury. I was actually very excited to serve once I walked into the court room. The minute I sat down on the bench and saw the two parties, I was excited to be able to be apart of the legal proceedings. I was surprised once the judge announced that the case was of a criminal nature rather than civil. Even more surprising was that the accused was being accused of committing murder in the first degree. I was filled with a multitude of emotions hearing the judge announce what I could potentially have to sit on the jury to deliberate about once all evidence was shown. All in all, my eyes were opened to the court system. Looking back I really wish I had known more about what lawyers actually do. I think a little more exposure to prosecuting and defense attorneys would have really tipped the scale for me. I really enjoyed the proceedings. It really blew my mind how thoughtful every question ask of a potential jury member really was. I think I really would have had a hard time choosing between becoming a nurse or a lawyer. My mind continues to ponder the judicial system, the law, and the different rolls each member in a court room plays. It's fascinating to me that people convicted of crimes are innocent until proven guilty. After this experience, I now really understand the magnitude of that simple phrase and law.

This week our baby can hear Dan and I talking better than ever before! The nerves in his ears are becoming more and more complex :)
